We, collectively, as content producers, need to cease tying every event to our content strategy, especially when it involves historical events and figures. And as consumers of content, we need to stop encouraging this behavior by clicking links like this. Don’t fall for it…again.
The general rule is think before you click publish.
- This past year we saw AT&T land in hot water over a 9/11 tweet.
- Last year, The Golf Channel decided to tweet on the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s I have a dream speech, about golf dreams.
Will these companies shut down as a result? Probably not. Do we temporarily question their judgement? Most definitely.
There is an entire year to put out high quality, helpful, and valuable content for your friends, fans, clients, prospects, and others. On a day of significance, when we’re supposed to be reflecting, don’t insert yourself into the conversation, just take the day off.
