I just got back from Bahrain. I had no idea what to expect as this was my first time going to any country in the Middle East. I didn’t have any expectations or preconceived notions, I really only worried about making an ass of myself or offending someone. From everything I’d read before going to Bahrain, I knew it to be a fairly progressive country, especially when compared to the other countries in the region. But I still was concerned about saying something the wrong way and being accidentally disrespectful.
Thankfully, everything went fine.
I was invited by Ali Sabkar, Co-Chair of Social Media Club Global after an introduction by Elly Deutch (thanks Elly!). I was given the opportunity to be the opening keynote and also provide a workshop. For the opening talk, I decided to do my flagship talk that I’ve been developing: Mastering Social Business Administration. In my speaking career, I’ve been making the move toward a more rehearsed and structured talk after 7 years of just knowing my material and winging it with funny slides. I was pleased with the way the talk went, but I know that it can be even better, and there are plenty more unrealized opportunities for storytelling and humor that I look forward to working on.
I was honestly nervous for this one. Much more nervous than I’d been since 2010. But once my feet hit the stage, I was back in my comfort zone.
The following day, I gave my workshop, but this time I switched to my standard outfit of casual blazer with Spider-man lapel pin and bright red sneakers.
I had a great time in Bahrain. Ali was an amazing host, and the people I met were warm, welcoming, smart, and eager to talk about social media and their businesses.
I hope it won’t be long before I can visit Bahrain again. Thanks for having me.
