Make it rainToday’s post is brought to you by the letter “C” for CONVERSION.

Conversions are why we all have a website.  We want visitors to do something.  That something is the key to our survival, so we want more of it.

So why not start with it?

Today I’m going to show you a simple way to learn a little bit more about understanding what makes you money on your website.

Start where it counts

Step 1: Sign into Google Analytics.

Step 2: Set the time span to 6 months or greater.

Step 3: Click on “All Pages” under “Content”

Step 4: Find the page that makes you money.  This is usually an opt-in page or a contact page.  It could be a “schedule a free consultation” page or whatever other page makes you money.

Step 5: Change the view to “Navigation Summary”

Step 6: Learn something.

Navigation Summary

This is going to show you the page that people were on prior to hitting your conversion point.  It will also show you where they went afterwards.

What now?

Well, now it’s time to learn from this data.

The first thing is: what are the pages that brought them in?  What is it about those pages that drive people to your conversion point?

Look at those pages and determine where that traffic came from.  Was it search traffic or direct traffic, did it come from social media or email marketing?  What’s working to get people where you want them to go?

If you see that a particular page is wildly successful at driving people to your conversion page, make sure that you are doing everything possible with content marketing and promotion to drive people to that page.

Whenever possible, a successful conversion should bring people to a specific page such as a “Thank You for Contacting Us” page.  This way, you can look at the total number of people that hit that page and determine what percentage converted.  If 20 people hit the Thank You page out of 40 visitors, you have a 50% conversion rate.

Next steps…

There’s much more that can be said about this topic, but that’s for another day.  Today, just consider that starting with the pages that make you money and working backwards is a good way to begin crafting a strategy to get more conversions moving forward.

Have you done this yet?  Anything remarkable come up?

This post WILL have a follow up.
