Today’s post is one to say thank you and also an opportunity to showcase how an editorial calendar for a blog works in practice. First, what is most important:
Thank You
Last week I asked for help fundraising for tomorrow’s American Diabetes Association Step Out Walk to Fight Diabetes. Each member of my company, Devine + Powers, set a fundraising goal. Originally my goal was $150, but with everyone’s help and support, we crushed that goal in like 2 hours. My next goal was to raise $500 and again due to all of the generosity and support I’m happy to announce that we have surpassed that goal as well. 20 people have generously given to this cause and helped us get closer to a cure.
I’d like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank each person who gave to this very important cause. It means a lot to me. Here is the list of my sponsors, in particular order, for tomorrow’s walk:
- My Mother – Carole Kanny
- My Father and Step-Mother, Terry and Maryanne Gibbard
- The best Chris Martin…NOT the one from Coldplay
- My former colleague – Denny Henderson
- My Mother’s long time best friend – Ellen Maggin
- Our wonderful friends, Carole and Ivan Segal
- My amazing friend, Drexel MBA Partner in crime and Zombie Apocolypse 1st Team Member – Steve Wu
- Even though I was a pain in her side while at Drexel, she always looked out for me – Donna Ferrari
- My amazing friend, Drexel MBA Partner in crime and Zombie Apocolypse 1st Team Member – Sumit Pathak
- Sweetest person I’ve ever met at an MBA mixer event – Cara Petonic
- The sassiest super-mom in South Jersey and my wife’s BFFAEAE – Jennifer Lucente
- One of my best friends for nearly a decade, my best man – David Coyne…but I call him DC
- My amazing sister-in-law – Laurie Hankinson
- My Wonderful Mother-in-Law – Patricia Siegel
- Good friend from High School dayz and in memory of Norman Blumenthal – Ginger Blumenthal
- My cousin forever regardless of parents martial status, Steven Caplan
I left off anyone who gave anonymously. I know who you are on my list and I want you all to know that I sincerely appreciate that you got involved and generously donated to this important cause.
Detour from the Editorial Calendar
So this week has definitely been a grand departure from the editorial calendar. On my editorial calendar this week I had “Why Good Design is so important,” I didn’t write a single post on this subject. Life happens. I was down and out for the first three days of this week and could barely find a comfortable position to lay around in, let alone write blog posts. So I switched it up. Other posts had to be written, like this one.
But what about the editorial calendar?
An editorial calendar is a map, not a set of tablets brought down from the mountain. You create an editorial calendar to guide you not to handcuff you. If something comes up that you need to write about, write about it. If your primary writer gets sick, it’s ok, let the blog go dark for a few days. People will be sad, they will cry, some may even protest, but in most cases life will go on. Remember that, because even though this blogging stuff seems hard, and an editorial calendar feels like a lot of pressure, life goes on and in the end, it’s just a blog. Take a deep breath and pick it back up another day, be flexible and learn to love the process instead of dreading the milestones.
