Some of you have been reading this blog for years…to you I extend my sincere gratitude. Others may be new to the party…to you I extend a warm welcome.
I’ve written more consistently on this blog than on either Social Media Philanthropy or True Voice Media (or any other place I blog). It could easily be argued that this blog is far less professionally valuable than my company blog. Surely, sharing relevant and valuable information and ideas that showcase my expertise on my company blog is more likely to increase company web traffic, notoriety, fame and fortune.
So why do I write here so often, and how do I keep up with it in the midst of everything else?
The Art of Freestyle
Unlike my company blog which has a distinct purpose and topic area, this blog is without rules and without boundaries.
I wake up and an idea pops into my head. Normally it’s a phrase, a play on words, or an idea based on a recent experience.
(In all honesty, it happens in the shower more often than not.)
All I do on this blog is riff on a topic that strikes me. The reason I write here so frequently, is that I just enjoy it more.
I don’t have an editorial calendar, I don’t have topics…I just write. Sometimes it’s deeply personal sometimes it’s (intended to be) humorous, sometimes it’s very formal and professional.
There is a certain freedom in writing without rules.
Becoming Fearless
The secret sauce to writing a blog like this is to throw away the rules, throw away the structure, be fearless and write what you want to say…or better yet, what you NEED to say.
- Yes, sometimes I worry that I’ve revealed too much, or that admitting fear, fault, or concern will be taken as a sign of weakness.
- Yes, sometimes I worry that people will think I’m talking about them, or that a client will be offended by my viewpoint.
- Yes, sometimes I wonder if I’ve gone too far, or sound as if I preaching.
- Yes, sometimes I feel terrified to hit the publish button.
I still hit publish.
The Secret Sauce
Wake up. Think. Write. Publish.
