Technology changed everything, didn’t it?
We removed the gatekeeper, let anyone publish, and now we create at unprecedented rates.
There’s more music, videos, websites, and books.
Anyone can start a radio show, create a course, launch a “tv” show.
The boundaries are gone, the rules are gone, we’ve created abundance, we’ve created excess.
But it got TOO big. There’s too much. It’s overwhelming.
So in the face of the overwhelm, we retreat from the magnitude to the safety of those we trust. We rely more heavily on our peer groups: our friends, our families, our networks.
And while our networks have grown, and become more accessible, the things that stand out are not the big things, but the small things; the simple displays of affection and care.
So many of us look for the giant leap forward, the massive innovation, the next big thing…but when it comes down to it, most just need to be a tiny bit better. For 2015, stop thinking about the next big thing for a moment, and start thinking about the series of small things.
For 2015, I’m going to focus on having better relationships with each of my clients. I’m going to focus on treating more of them like friends. I’m going to care even more deeply about every hour that I spend on my work.
Little things…but I bet it will all add up.
