They say…

“We NEED a Facebook Page.”

“We NEED to Twitter.”

“We NEED to blog.”

They say…

“People are using all of this social media stuff, we have to get involved.”

Why?

It’s a question that gets overlooked as business leaders get swept up in “we need to…”  The hype surrounding social media has caused so many to overlook the most basic question.  Why do we need to do this?

Often times the answer is “because people are doing it and we need to also.”  Goals, that would ordinarily revolve around business, get reduced to the size of a following on Twitter or Facebook.

Many businesses get caught up in Social Media and have incredibly misguided expectations.  The truth is, some businesses are just fine without Tweeting.

A few questions before “we need _____”

What do you want to accomplish in the first 6 months?

Do you expect to make money from Social Media?  How?

How do you currently acquire new business?

What sites do your customers use?

If Johnny jumped off a bridge…

Don’t just get into Social Media because it’s “the thing to do” or because “everybody else is doing it.”  There’s virtually nothing else a business would get into for those reasons.  Think about why you should participate in these sites first, then create a Twitter account.
