I read an article yesterday called: What If Google’s Social Layer Is Chrome? What If Facebook Builds A Browser? I’ve been thinking about it ever since.
The idea is actually quite brilliant if you think about it. The idea of signing in once, no matter where you are, no matter what computer you are on and having a consistant experience, is refreshing. Think about it.
Don’t you hate having to remember 100’s of passwords? Facebook has made it very easy with Facebook connect. You can sign into Facebook and in many cases not need to sign into another site; you just click the Connect with Facebook” button.
At a browser lever this is a great idea because it goes that one step further. ANY site, not just the Facebook connect sites can be integrated at the browser level. Sign into your browser once, Google loads all of your settings, your extensions, your logins, your bookmarks..sign out and POOF it’s gone.
People have been speculating about Google’s need to be involved in social, perhaps to create their own social network. Here’s the question…why do they need to do that? The reason Google has a need to be in social is to get more information to serve more relevant searches, so you’ll keep using Google and allowing them to make a ton of money from advertising. If Google creates seamless integration with any and all other social networks in the browser, they’re getting every bit of information they need to customize your search. They don’t need their own social network. And nothing is stopping them from creating their own browser based social network, similar to Opera Unite.
I highly recommend a read on the article and I’d also suggest that if you are not spending some quality time with Google Chrome that you take the time to get to know it. It could be the next BIG thing.
