If you’ve read my blog before you’ve seen a few comparisons of twitter applications, mainly desktop applications. Let’s revisit where we’ve been.
I’ve dabbled with Adobe AIR applications, Tweetdeck and Twhirl. I find most of the Adobe Air clients to be too resource hungry and irritating to use from an interface perspective. I’ve tried Seesmic and I didn’t like it and really can’t understand why anyone makes a big deal over it. There were apps worthy of competing for top Twitter client: Tweetie and Nambu.
All of them have their ups and downs and none are worthy of being crowned KING of the Twitter Apps. Nambu and Tweetie were the closest yet both were only made for Mac, which normally wouldn’t bother me, but I also use a Lenovo Thinkpad at work, much to my dismay.
Which brings us to the main point…the new competitors: web applications. One of the best things about using a web application is that they are much less memory intensive which is a problem that seems to plague many of the desktop applications. Another thing that Tweetdeck recently fixed with their syncing system is having to set up your groups on every individual computer you use.
Hootsuite brings just what’s needed in an easy to use interface:
- Search
- Groups
- Multiple Accounts Support including the ability to tweet from multiple accounts simultaneously
- Built in URL shortening with Tracking
- Scheduled Tweets
- Ping.fm support
In short, you can think of it like Tweetdeck on crack, online. It has replaced all of my desktop clients as I can access hootsuite from Mac, PC or Linux and it’s the same either way. Give it a try, Jeff likes it.
