Hurricanes, or “cyclones” as they have been called in the Eastern Hemisphere, have existed for hundreds of years long before stupid Twitter. Back when the last enormous hurricane hit Australia there was no social networking, people would just scream for help at the top of their lungs. The hurricane is what is interesting. Twitter is dumb and serves no real purpose, at all. The Facebook page, Cyclone Yasi Update that serves updates about the hurricane has 89,716 “likes” or “fans” or whatever those Silicon Vally losers call it. Those people could have just as easily watched the weather channel. It seems as though the hurricane has been forgotten and its been reduced to: OMG did you see the update about Yasi on Facebook?
Right now it looks like Yasi will have caused serious damage to Australia, though not as bad as we had expected. Last summer, in THE NEW YORKER, where I work, and write and provide my brilliant ideas, I wrote about Twitter and why it’s not important in activism. I wrote a follow up post yesterday about why Egypt doesn’t need it. I also don’t think it’s important in natural disasters. Don’t believe me? I wrote “The Tipping Point” what have you written? Besides, the magazine I work for has dry, witty comics so clearly you are not as intelligent as me.
Weak ties. Strong bonds.
High risk.
Another thing, didn’t they have Twitter during Katrina? Didn’t seem to stop that devastation did it?
Twitter is dumb.
