64 days ago I was laid off from my position at Devine + Powers. It was primarily a financial decision but also had a little to do with our philosophical differences about how to build a successful social media practice group.
I could’ve written a blog post that night, seething with frustration and anger. I could’ve enumerated things I didn’t like, or rehashed bad experiences. I could’ve been a real jerk about it. But what would that have gotten me other than 15 minutes of satisfaction and a trail of searchable content that makes me look like an immature brat?
I’ve often said that everyone is allotted one bridge to burn and you can only really do it before you are 25. After 25 it stops being a job and starts being part of your career. After 25 you should know better. I used mine, at 20.
Correction, I emphatically used mine, at 20.
I’m glad that I decided to take the higher road. The people at Devine + Powers are all good people and regardless of why the decision was made, it was made. I’m much happier now working for myself and building a company exactly how I want to build it.
Things happen to us for a reason, or so we tell ourselves. I think the real point is that things happen and you can find a reason for it if you choose to. I think it is how we react to situations that shows what we’re made of.
Some crumble under pressure and get sad or depressed, some lash out with fury, and some sit in deep thought before reacting.
How will you react the next time you are under pressure?
No matter what, I suggest you sleep on it. It might be the difference between keeping a relationship open and amicable, and saying things you don’t really mean just because you are upset.
