At one point, people looked up at the sky, and they knew nothing about what they saw. So they invented stories to explain what they saw. Ironically, they had less information but claimed more certainty about what they saw.
The more we learn about space, the more questions we have, and consequently, the larger the body of information that we realize is unknown. The more we know, the more we understand how little we know.
The same is true in business and in life.
Strangely, those with the most knowledge behave as if they know the least. While those who know very little tend to walk around as if they have it all figured out.
This is a strange phenomenon, but not at all uncommon.
Partly, the problem is the difficulty of staying in the uncomfortable space of not knowing. The beginner’s mind can only exist through not knowing and that can be a scary place to be when we’re expected to be smart, strong, competent and have all of the answers.
It’s hard to do, but one of the most important things I do for myself to keep growing is to remind myself, that I don’t know shit. Because as much as I know, there is so much that I don’t. Being cocky doesn’t help me grow. I’m grateful for the experiences I’ve had recently to remind me how much more knowledge is out there, waiting to be learned.
