The best thing
…about working in an agency is that you get the opportunity to work with a variety of different clients in different industries with different challenges. No two clients are the same. Agencies are never dull in that sense.
The brain stays nimble.
Creativity is essential
It’s always exciting to meet with a new client in a vertical that you may not know much about.
The worst thing
…about working in an agency is that you are always working with various clients in different industries with different challenges. No two clients are the same. While it’s never dull, it’s rarely stable and it’s always intimidating learning a new language.
The brain is constantly stretched.
Creativity must wait for understanding.
It’s generally unnerving to meet a new client in a vertical that you know nothing about.
Two sides of the same coin
Just in case you missed it, the best and worst aspects are the same thing. The constant changing, and learning new industries, is both exciting and unnerving. Sometimes it feels like specializing in one area is the way to go, but eventually you cease to be a multi-faceted, creative agency and begin to just rehash the same ideas with a new coat of paint. The basis of creativity is recombining new and seemingly unrelated concepts, I love it.
So when I’m feeling overwhelmed by all of the new terms and buzz words, the concepts that seem vague and nebulous to the outsider (me), I remind myself that this is why I choose not to specialize in one industry.
