They say:
“the more things change, the more they stay the same.”
There’s no doubt the world has changed a great deal over the last decade. What’s most interesting to me, are the times that I realize how little has actually changed.
Snapchat just released and update including something they are calling: “Chat 2.0.”
Some of the “groundbreaking” features of this update are the ability to text chat WHILE video chatting, send stickers in chats, and continuously move from story to story without interruption. One of the more interesting features that was touted was the ability to…make phone calls from the app. Yes, voice calls, like the kind we used to make…but now from an app.
In other news, I’ve heard that the new iPods will offer cassette based storage, and Ford’s new model will be pulled by horses. Of course I’m kidding.
When we follow the news, it’s easy to believe that things are fundamentally different than they were. Yesterday, I spoke to a room full of attorneys, some young, some older. I found myself giving them the advice that their best use of social media would be to use it to meet people, and invite them to meet face to face for lunch or coffee…I often give this advice.
When you remove all the clutter and all of the noise, it’s still just people doing things with people. The only difference now, is the channel we use to do it. So before you get caught up in the hype–and I know it’s hard not to–try to think if things are all that different. I’ll bet you’ll feel more at ease when you see that things haven’t really changed all that much.
