I recently screwed up for a client.
Even typing those words makes me cringe.
I’m Not Perfect
Neither are you.
But when mistakes happen, do you find that you hold yourself to the expectation that you are perfect?
I do.
I’m not a perfectionist. I honestly believe that we learn the most from our failures.
But I also hate losing.
I’m less frustrated about losing than I am over the realization that there was no way I was going to win.
Sometimes, to be perfect in one way, requires you to be imperfect in another.
Maybe if three or four variables changed, maybe if some piece of technology cooperated, or maybe if something the day before didn’t cause me to get up a little bit later that day, and so on… maybe then I could’ve won.
The number of reasons why it didn’t work out could have easily exceeded what I can count on both hands because that’s how life works. It’s not linear, it’s zig-zags and squiggles. So why bother tracking all the reasons?
Maybe days like this call for throwing my hands up in the air, taking a deep breath, trying to fix it, and moving forward.
It sure beats the hell out of perfection, which probably means the game I’m playing is too easy.
Today’s Assignment: Think about the last thing you screwed up; the most recent time you didn’t give it your best, or circumstance screwed you over, or something just didn’t go to plan. Now stand up, take a deep breath, and let it out. That’s it. š
