I recently signed up for DropBox, a service that reminds me of what I fantasized MobileMe’s iDisk would be. The way it works is that Dropbox installs a folder on any number of computers that you want. Dropbox then syncs any files in the folder across every computer that the DropBox software is installed on. It’s easy as pie. It also gives you the benefit of logging in Dropbox online and giving you the option to share files easily. Recently I figured out that the combination of 1Password and Dropbox allows me to keep all of my passwords in sync across the 3 different Macs that I use.
Another standout feature over iDisk is that it’s also noticeably faster than the iDisk which is PAINFULLY SLOW. I’ve pretty much stopped using the iDisk all together for that reason alone. Dropbox syncs your files in the background.
The ONLY downside that I see is that there is an extremely large gap between the free and pay options. It goes from 2GB for free to 50GB for $99/year. That is a large gap there. My recommendation to the folks at Dropbox is to offer something in between. I’d be very willing to pay $25/year, maybe even $50/year for DropBox service, but $100 is just too much. I already have a Flickr Pro account ($25/year) Remember the Milk Pro Account ($25) and MobileMe ($99). Adding Dropbox on top of that is just too much for me. If I didn’t have MobileMe I’d sign up in a heartbeat, so I guess as soon as I drop MobileMe, I’ll go for the pay account.
