Here’s the biggest thing going on right now in social media: “everyone” is talking.

Content marketing and self-promotion has gotten out of control and “no one” is listening.

“No one” is responding to other people, commenting on THEIR content or doing anything to create the basis of a relationship.

We’re all putting stuff out there and spending the majority of time on ourselves: what we’re going to post, how we’re going to promote ourselves.

I say “no one” and “everyone” in quotes because obviously some people are doing this, but join most LinkedIn Groups and you’ll see, it’s all about “ME!!!!!”  Follow people on Twitter and you’ll see, it’s all about “ME!!!!!”  Follow companies on Facebook and you’ll see, it’s all about “ME!!!!!”

The stream of blog posts, press releases, webinars and incessant content-for-the-sake-of-content has drown out the profound opportunity to help others.

What if…

What if you spent the next month looking for problems to solve?

What if you spent the next day providing a silver lining to the storm cloud on someone’s Facebook wall?

What if you spent the majority of your social media usage on other people and stopped trying to tell everyone how great YOU are?
