I’m happy that there is something out there that can give us an approximate measure of our “influence.” Unfortunately I think we are looking at the Klout discussion all wrong. I don’t have a fully fleshed out post about this yet, but it will be going on my blog Social Media Philanthropy soon. The crux of it is this, I am sick of hearing about Klout. People talk about it in a way that makes my stomach turn. People are so overwhelmingly concerned with their Klout score that they pass up good opportunities if it won’t impact their Klout score. Klout should be an approximate measure, but not something to obsess over and take as fact. It’s not something companies should use to determine what level of service the should give. I really need to know…WHO CARES what your Klout score is? What does that actually DO for you? It’s an ego metric, but in the end, it’s just a game, nothing more. SEO is a game too, it’s just a game that actually means something; people search for things, so you want to rank higher. Influence is a conversation that has become too narrow and it’s because of a Klout-centric style of thinking. There will be a full post about this but I just had to let this out.
