Labels and boxes and buckets…all of these things help us to categorize things and classify things and organize things to create some sort of order out of the chaos.
But I struggle so much with defining my career with labels and boxes and buckets. Because what I do doesn’t sit in one bucket.
- I’m not a social media guy.
- I’m not a digital guy.
- I’m not a marketing guy.
I am an overall strategist. I think of things. And these things permeate all aspects of business.
But I can’t call myself a business consultant, because there are areas of business I know very little about. I can’t just call myself a strategist, or no one will know what kind of strategy I should be involved with.
The trends in the marketplace related to technology and behaviors are not specifically marketing driven.
I sometimes have trouble putting my company into a single box, explaining it using terminology that others already understand.
And if for some reason I decided that I wanted to shut down my company (God forbid) and go to work for somebody else, I wouldn’t even know what to be looking for because what I do is not meant to be kept in a single box.
We simultaneously need the labels and boxes and buckets, and move further away from clarity because of it.
