I feel like “career” used to mean something very specific and today it means something very broad.  I feel like people used to believe that a career was the job that you did for 50 years until retirement, now I feel like it’s the jobs, that you go from every few years over the course of your working life.  Careers used to be the means by which you paid your rent whether you liked what you were doing or not, now it’s still how you pay your rent but the desire to get more than monetary fulfillment from your work is stronger than ever.

As the tides shift towards a more fluid and flexible “career” we lose some things and gain others.  We lose some job security, but we gain independence.

What is a career today?  I don’t know exactly, but it’s probably not what it used to be.
