There’s this thing that happens. Perhaps it always did. But I think the internet is making it worse.
I call it the one way competition.
This happens when one person is competing with others and making it known that they won, even though no one is competing back.
- It’s the person who posts about their expensive house with a humblebrag about how few people could afford such luxury.
- It’s the person who posts to Instagram about their trip to Puerto Rico only to subtly remark that their hotel is “nowhere near as nice as when we went to the Amalfi Coast.”
- It’s the person who mentions dollar amounts, brand names, and other status symbols only if for no other reason that to prove they’re winning at life.
The thing I most commonly find about those people when I meet them in real life, is that they are painfully insecure. They worry so desperately about being PERCEIVED as a winner, that they forget to go about life like truly successful people do.
Rags to riches stories are inspirational. Stories that are just about the riches are just obnoxious.
If you have to keep telling us what a winner you are…you probably aren’t.
