Too many leaders make the mistake of talking at their employees.

Their entire agenda is all about THEM.

It’s too many “I statements”

  • I want this
  • I need this

And too many “you statements”

  • You didn’t do what I asked
  • You aren’t performing

The same thing could be accomplished more effectively by talking from the same side of the table.

same side

Talk about where WE are going.

“We need to work together to accomplish our goals”

When using I statements and YOU statements, try doing it differently.

  • How can I better support you
  • I want you to feel comfortable coming to me so I can get you the resources you need

Leadership is a privilege not a right. Signing the checks doesn’t make you a leader.

You can’t buy leadership. You can buy the position, but leaders are measured by results.

Try a different approach if you’re not getting what you want.
