I’d like to state that I think this is one of the most clever pieces of advertising I’ve seen. This was brought to my attention by Matt Engler on his Tumblr blog. It got me thinking about marketing, social media and PR. Something I know a number of companies struggle with is the pace at which they are expecting to participate in Social Media, or the pressure to generate relevant PR. What is relevant today may not be relevant tomorrow.
This is particularly tricky with companies that are very hierarchal or silo’d. The thing to remember is that the window of opportunity is small, often very small and with social media often extremely small. Attention spans are getting shorter and messages are now expected to be delivered in 140 characters. As an example, I recently had an idea for an iphone app and the developer I wanted to tell about it said “pitch it to me in 140 characters.” It is because of this series of points that it’s imperative that businesses learn to move quickly and seize opportunities.
A great message is only a great message provided that it is timely.
